Kevin Bio
Kevin Heffernan, Ph.D
Associate Professor of Movement Science and Education
Director, Applied Neurovascular Physiology Lab
Sydney Bio
Undergraduate Student (Neuroscience & Behavior)

Sydney Brice is an undergraduate student at the Barnard College of Columbia University. She is a rising Senior, and working towards earning her Bachelor of Arts degree in Neuroscience & Behavior with a minor in Africana Studies. She joined the ANVPL lab team in 2024 as a volunteer student researcher. Her work in the lab is centered around studying brain blood flow. More specifically, supporting the various ongoing studies that seek to incorporate Neuroscience research techniques and investigating the brain's connection to vascular health.

Jessica Cassette Pic
Undergraduate Student (Dance & Exercise Science)

Jessica is a visiting senior from Florida State University's School of Dance and Cardiovascular & Applied Physiology Lab. Her research interests include lifestyle factors to optimize human health and longevity. As a dancer, she is particularly interested in physical rehabilitation practices and vascular aging. Upon graduating with her undergraduate degree, Jessica hopes to enter a combined DPT/PhD program to expand her knowledge within the field. Outside the academic space, she enjoys exploring new coffee shops, historical landmarks, and art exhibits.

Story Downing
Undergraduate Student (Neuroscience & Behavior)

Story is a senior at Barnard studying Neuroscience and Behavior and Human Rights, completing her senior thesis in the lab. As a mid-distance track athlete, she is particularly interested in the impact of consistent exercise on vascular aging and neurovascular coupling and its implications for the importance of accessibility to sports participation. She enjoys managing participant recruitment and scheduling. Her favorite lab measure is one of arterial stiffness: carotid femoral pulse wave velocity.

Aastha Keswani
Masters Student (Applied Physiology)

Aastha is a first-year master's student in the Applied Physiology program at Teachers College, Columbia University. She holds a degree in physical therapy from Manipal University in India and has experience working with diverse populations, including athletes, dancers, children, and the elderly. Fascinated by the connection between the brain and the arteries, she is excited to further investigate this relationship, particularly within the context of dancers.

Josh Bio
Masters Student (Neuroscience & Education)

Josh is a 2nd year masters student in the neuroscience program at Teachers College, Columbia University. Prior to his time at TC, he earned a degree in medical science from Ithaca College, graduating in 2022. At this time, he shadowed the neurosurgery department at UCSF Fresno, which sparked his interest in clinical neuroscience. Some of his primary research interests include the effects of exercise on cerebrovascular and cardiovascular function as well as vestibular function and its relation to spine injury. Outside of academics, he is an avid sports fan and loves weight-lifting.

Kate Picture
Undergraduate Student (Neuroscience & Human Rights)

Kate is a senior at Barnard studying Neuroscience and Human Rights. She runs cross country and track at Columbia and loves seeing the connection between exercise and the brain. Her favorite part of working in the lab is gaining experience with different measurement techniques, especially the cerebral blood brain flow and EEG.

Alexa Bio
Undergraduate Student (Neuroscience & Behavior)

Alexa is a sophomore studying Neuroscience & Behavior at Barnard College. She is fascinated by the complex interplay between the neurological and vascular systems and is eager to explore how the brain and arteries influence each other. Alexa looks forward to working with participants and expanding her knowledge in this field. Outside of the lab, she enjoys exploring parks, rock climbing, and café hopping.

Undergraduate Student (Neuroscience & Behavior)

Tasnia is a senior at Barnard College of Columbia University majoring in Neuroscience & Behavior and double minoring in Education Studies and Science & Public Policy. Previously, Tasnia has studied the effects of culture on adolescent mental health, fostering her interest in psychology and neuroscience based research. Currently, she is interested in studying the effects of vascular aging on cognitive function in young adults. Apart from her research interests, Tasnia enjoys baking, painting, and reading.

Sam Picture
Masters Student (Nutrition & Exercise Physiology)

Samantha grew up in Hong Kong, spending much of her time sailing and running. She earned her bachelor's in Nutrition and Medical Sciences from University College London, where she researched body composition and malnutrition in female endurance athletes with relative energy deficiency in sport (REDs). Samantha has worked in diverse nutrition settings, including school education in the Philippines, nonprofit services in London, and eating disorder care in Massachusetts. While at UCL, she competed in cross country, varsity rowing, and completed her first marathon. Now pursuing an MS-RDN in Nutrition and Exercise Physiology at Teachers College, she is eager to explore nutrition in the context of energy availability and athletic performance, while preparing herself for a career as a dietitian.

Chris Bio
Masters Student (Neuroscience & Education)

Christofer a second-year master’s student in the Neuroscience and Education program. Prior to pursuing this degree, Christofer worked in the field of education with different roles and responsibilities in Indonesia, his home country. Christofer discovered his passion for neuroscience while navigating the challenges of his first year of teaching. He became immediately captivated by the subject. His primary interest lies in understanding how we can apply neuroscience to enhance education in practical ways. In the Applied Neurovascular Physiology Lab, he will explore the impact of exercise on cognitive functions and the factors that mediate this relationship. Christofer grew up in a tropical country, so he finds it difficult to adjust to the gloomy weather in NYC that can last for days or even weeks. When the sun is up, he usually is in the best mood. In his free time, he enjoys playing badminton and traveling to new places. Christofer considers himself a verified foodie in town.

Paige Bio
Ph.D. Student (Kinesiology)

Paige is a first-year doctoral student in the Applied Physiology program at Teachers College, Columbia University. She earned her bachelor’s degree from the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts and her master’s degree from Syracuse University. Her research interests include, but are not limited to, understanding of how psychological stress affects vascular health and chronic disease risk factors. During her free time, Paige enjoys cycling, skiing, and staying active.
