Last year, an anonymous donor established the Walter E. Sindlinger Writing Award to recognize Teachers College students who demonstrate outstanding writing in the field of education. The award, according to the donor, "will be presented each year as a grant of not less than $1,000" and "awarded by the Dean of the College in the spring prior to the academic year."

Each of the nine departments was requested to nominate one paper, written for a course, which exemplifies excellent writing. The winner, Melissa Steele of the Department of Curriculum and Teaching, was awarded $1,000 for her paper "Critique of Kwanza and Me."

The Dean's Office also provided a second place award of $500 to Sheri Ranis of the Department of Organization and Leadership for "Organizational Problem Analysis: Structural, Human Resource, Political and Cultural/Symbolic Frames."

Both winners were selected by the Committee on Faculty Research Fellowships. Its members are professors Lois Bloom, Harold Cook, Ann Gentile, Elaine Rigolosi, and Bruce Vogeli.

The award is named after the late emeritus professor, Walter Eugene Sindlinger, who joined the TC faculty in 1958 and led in formulating one of the first programs of study that prepared school administrators for service in post-World War II America.
