Andrew Gordon, Assistant Professor of Movement Sciences and Education, has gotten a big boost for his research from the federal government.

The National Science Foundation awarded him $361,000 for five years as part of its Faculty Early Career Development program. Gordon is using the grant to study how sensory information is used for the planning and control of hand movement.

The other grant is $150,000 over two years from the National Institutes of Health to study hand-motor control in Huntington's Disease. Impaired hand function is among the most disabling motor symptoms of the disease, he said. He wants to develop therapies for the disease that increase the independence of people with Huntington's. Both grants will provide some funds to support student research assistants.
