Computer Grading: Friend or Foe?
A Time Magazine article published on February 17, "When Computers Do The Grading," talked about a new computer software program, called E-Rater, that actually grades essays on the GMAT exam. The article raised the question as to whether or not writing can be graded in such a pre-formatted manner. David Schaafsma, Professor of English Education at Teachers College, Columbia University said no. He was quoted in the article and said it’s unlikely that machines will understand the human aspect of writing.
