Many school districts are looking abroad to recruit teachers particularly in high demand areas of math, science, and foreign language. School administrators are having such a difficult time finding qualified teachers in the U.S. due to a national teacher shortage that they are looking to countries like India, Austria, and Spain to fill the gap. Some educators argue that in addition to finding qualified teachers, international recruiting helps to diversify schools and broadens student experience.

Many, however, are alarmed by the international teacher hiring claiming that these teachers are not trained in the issues facing U.S. students. "You may know subject matter but understanding student and community culture is equally important in delivering information to the students", states Tom Jehnings, the associate dean for teacher education.
