The Helen Keller International Art Show at Milbank Library
The Helen Keller International Art Show, an exhibition of artwork created by children with blindness, is on display at TC's Milbank Memorial Library.
The Helen Keller International Art Show is a project of the Council for Exceptional Children's (CEC) International Division on Visual Impairments. Since the invitation was open to children of all ages who are visually impaired, blind or deafblind, teachers and children from all over the world sent art to the exhibit. Teachers are encouraged to incorporate visual arts into the individual educational plan of each student. Students choose their own medium to work in.
Each student who enters a piece is considered a winner, but not all the pieces can be put into the show. The selected pieces travel to the International Convention of CEC and then on to other sites such as Duke University, Florida State University, Washington National Cathedral, as well as the United States Senate and Congressional offices.
This year, TC's William Featherstone Chapter of the CEC and the Program for Educators of Learners with Blindness and Visual Impairment have the unique opportunity to bring this show, which includes 12 pieces of art by school age children, to New York City. The exhibition will be shown at TC as part of a special tour selected for the states of Iowa and New York.
Appropriately, the art show ends its yearlong exhibition tour at TC, the birthplace of the CEC. The exhibition coincided with the third annual conference sponsored by the Center for Opportunities and Outcomes for People with Disabilities, "When Worlds Collide 2001: Promises and Realities."
