James Borland (Curriculum and Teaching) spoke at a conference in Beijing sponsored by UNESCO and the International Educational Foundation. He also represented TC at the American Education Fair which is a showcase for U.S. Universities and a chance for them to present themselves to Chinese educators and potential students.

Kevin Dougherty (Organization and Leadership) was recently elected chair of the Sociology of Education Section of the American Sociological Association. The Section has over 600 members. He will take office in August 2003.

Bert Konowitz (Arts and Humanities) has been chosen as an ASCAP Award recipient this year. These awards, made by the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers, reflect our continuing commitment to assist and encourage ASCAP composers. They are granted by an independent panel and are based upon the unique prestige value of each writer's catalog of original compositions, as well as recent performances in areas not surveyed by the Society.

Herbert Ginsburg (Human Development), the EDC Center for Children and Technology, and Wireless Generation won a two-year $460,000 National Science Foundation grant for research to help uncover strategies children use to solve arithmetic problems and also to help teachers learn how to correct "unsuccessful strategies." When the research evaluation is complete, a new mathematics assessment tool will be available that incorporates learning from recent work on observational assessments as well as mathematics teaching and learning.

Derald Wing Sue (Clinical and Counseling Psychology) was recently elected to the position of President-Elect of the Division of Counseling Psychology of the American Psychological Association. He is the fourth TC professor to be elected to that position. The others were: Roger A. Myers (1976); Albert S. Thompson (1963); and Donald E. Super (1952).

Stephen Silverman (Biobehavioral Sciences) delivered the Raymond A. Weiss Distinguished Research Lecture at the meeting of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. (Dr. Weiss is a TC alumnus). Silverman also became, as of September 1st, editor-in-chief of the Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport, the oldest and largest journal in the area of kinesiology/movement sciences and education. He will serve a three-year term.
