Dubuque area educators on same page as Carnegie
The New York based Carnegie Corporation recently called for an overhaul of teacher education in this country, focusing on a clinical approach to the teaching profession. Carnegie recommends that new teachers work under master teachers in a formal two-year residency and receive continuing support as they begin teaching. Schools in Dubuque, Iowa already follow many of the recommendations of the Carnegie Corporation, and without the financial support Carnegie has promised to some other schools.

Carnegie recommends that new teachers work under master teachers in a formal two-year residency and receive continuing support as they begin teaching. Schools in Dubuque, Iowa already follow many of the recommendations of the Carnegie Corporation, and without the financial support Carnegie has promised to some other schools. The Carnegie Corporation's recommendations acknowledge the difficulty of teaching and the importance of good teachers in children's lives.
Arthur Levine, president of Teachers College,
said a teacher must "know about children's development, different learning styles, pedagogy and the plethora of different ways for reaching children, curriculum, assessment, classroom management, ways to teach children who don't speak English and students with disabilities - and, of course, the subject matter as well. Apart from that, the job is pretty easy."
