Inappropriate Teacher-Student Relationships on the Rise

The percentage of New York City school staffers having inappropriate relations with students soared 30% in 2004, and associate professor Marla Brassard said this is despite schools’ efforts to prevent such behavior.
The percentage of New York City school staffers having inappropriate relations with students soared 30% in 2004, and associate professor Marla Brassard said this is despite schools' efforts to prevent such behavior.  "Any time you put fully sexually mature people together, there is sexual attraction. Schools do a good job policing, but it still happens," said Brassard who teaches in the Department of Health and Behavior Studies.

The City's report corresponds to a national trend.  A recent report by the U.S. Department of Education found more than 4.5 million students endure treatment ranging from lewd comments to forced sexual acts by school employees.
