Like Teachers College which launched the Carroll and Milton Petrie Fellows Program in 2003, other ivy league institutions are beginning to financially support students who commit to teaching in public schools in their surrounding communities.  According to President Levine, these programs validate the decision to pursue teaching as a career.  "It raises the prestige of the profession," he said. "We're making them rock stars."

While Yale University will provide free tuition and stipends for master's candidates who make a three-year commitment to teaching in New Haven, Connecticut schools, Brown University will initiate master's degree program in urban education coupled with internships in Providence, Rhode Island area schools.
