Classy Top Aide to Joel Is Leaving
Deputy Schools Chancellor Carmen Farina, a former teacher who rose to become the city's second-highest school official, is retiring in June- a development that education experts yesterday called a blow to City Hall.
"As an insider in the school system, she established credibility for an administration headed by a noneducation outsider," said Arthur Levine, president of Teachers College at Columbia University.
"She talked truth both to the chancellor and mayor and to school administrators and teachers as well as interest groups such as the unions," he said.
