Newtown Resident To Serve As Education Commissioner

Newtown resident George Coleman will serve as interim commissioner of education for Connecticut starting Aug 14. Coleman, 55, joined the state Department of Education in 1987 and has been associate commissioner for the Division of Teaching and Learning Programs and Services since 1998.
Newtown resident George Coleman will serve as interim commissioner of education for Connecticut starting Aug 14. Coleman, 55, joined the state Department of Education in 1987 and has been associate commissioner for the Division of Teaching and Learning Programs and Services since 1998.

"It's quite exciting and an honor to have the board's confidence to provide continuity for the department while we wait for a new commissioner,'' Coleman said Wednesday.

Coleman joined the department in 1987 as a consultant in the kindergarten and the primary grades. He received his bachelor's degree from Tuskegee Institute and two master's degrees from the Teachers College at Columbia University.
