U Names New Dean
Darlyne Bailey, academic dean at Columbia University's Teachers College, will be the dean of the University of Minnesota's College of Education and Human Development. Bailey, 53, has a long background in teaching and social work, skills she'll need to call on as the U combines elements of the former General College and department of family social science into a remade college.
Bailey, who'll become the U's first woman African-American dean, said she was "moved beyond words" by her selection and called it "an opportunity to build a unique college that will make a difference in countless numbers of lives."
Bailey currently serves as vice president for academic affairs and dean of Teachers College at Columbia in New York. She served as acting president of the college for several months in 2003.
