Coastside Literacy Program Goes National

Over the past few years local teachers and officials have forged a link between the Coastside and one of the nation's leading teaching institutes, Teachers College at Columbia University.  The goal is to promote literacy and mesh the teaching methods of elite private schools in the local public system.

Lucy Calkins downplays the revolutionary aspect of the program.  She said she is always wary of promoting something as radical and new and think that people have a tendency to attack programs presented in that way.

"A lot of these practices used to be practices that one great teacher in a school was working on, and now we are making them more widespread.  Reading better by reading more - pretty basic," Calkins said.  This article appeared in the February 23, 2007 edition of the Half Moon Bay Review.com.
