Adi, a 23-year-old Israeli woman, survived the 2004 Asian tsunami virtually unharmed. Yet four months after returning home, Adi could barely get through the day.
 

Such practical matters help determine who recovers well, says psychologist George Bonanno of the Teachers' College at Columbia University. "Having economic resources makes it easier to cope well. You have less stress. Being in good health means you have fewer things to worry about. Having social support is important because we can talk to other people about it," he says.
