Brooks-Gunn Honored by Northwestern University
Jeanne Brooks-Gunn, TC's Virginia and Leonard Marx Professor of Child and Parent Development Education, and co-director of the National Center for Children and Families, has received an honorary degree from Northwestern University, recognizing her as one of the nation's most distinguished and influential developmental psychologists.
Brooks-Gunn spoke at the convocation exercises for Northwestern’s School of Education and Social Policy on June 2, reminding graduates that “We all subscribe to the fundamental belief that investment in people is crucial,” and urging them to “believe in our ability to bring about change.”
Brooks-Gunn was one of seven people to receive honorary degrees from Northwestern this year. The others were the internationally renowned jazz musician Wynton Marsalis; Fred Kavli, Norwegian-American entrepreneur and philanthropist; H. Eugene Stanley, a University Professor with appointments in physics, chemistry, biomedical engineering and physiology at Boston University; Lonnie G. Thompson, University Distinguished Professor in The Ohio State University Department of Geological Sciences; and Northwestern University President Henry S. Bienen and Chairman of the Board of Trustees Patrick G. Ryan, both of whom will step down from their positions after 14 years.
