CCRC's Tom Bailey Quoted in Time and Bloomberg Stories About Community Colleges

Thomas Bailey, the George and Abby O'Neill Professor of Economics and Education, is quoted in a Time Magazine story about President Obama's push to support community colleges as a tool in the campaign for economic recovery. "If you're going to increase the population that has some college, it isn't going to be among upper-middle-class white people," says Bailey, director of the Community College Research Center. "Community colleges will have to play a central role." The CCRC is also featured in a Bloomberg News story about its $5 million grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to study ways to boost graduation rates at community colleges.

And yet, the Time story reports, less than a third of community college students finish their degree in six years, compared with 58 percent of students at four-year schools. To try to figure out why, the Gates Foundation awarded Bailey’s center $5 million to study obstacles to graduation at community colleges.
