Students Awarded Diversity Grants
The Committee for Community and Diversity at Teachers College has awarded $3,000 grant awards to two doctoral students as part of the President's Grant for Student Research in Diversity.
Receiving the grants are: Annie Smiley, a student in the International Educational Development Program, and Grace Clarke Hillyer, a student in the Health Education Program. In addition to Smiley and Hillyer, Hakim Williams, a doctoral student in the International Educational Development Program, has received a $1,000 honorable mention award.
Smiley will use the funding to support her dissertation research on scholarships for orphans and vulnerable children in Lesotho . Hillyer’s research focuses on the need to educate uninsured Hispanic women in New York City regarding colorectal cancer screening. Williams is examining the causes of youth violence at a school in Trinidad and Tobago .
The grant initiative is designed to provide support for outstanding student research projects that focus on diversity in research, teaching, learning, or community building.
