TC Hosts U.S. Secretary of Education for Major Policy Address
On Thursday morning, October 22nd, at 11:30 a.m., Teachers College hosted U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan as he delivered a major policy address on teacher preparation. Secretary Duncan spoke at the Alfred J. Lerner Hall on the Columbia University Campus. His appearance inaugurated TC's Phyllis L. Kossoff Lecture.

That will be one of the key take-home messages delivered by Arne Duncan, U.S. Secretary of Education, as part of a major policy address on October 22nd in New York City. Hosted by Teachers College, Columbia University, the speech will help set direction for the Obama administration on the issue of teacher preparation.

Kossoff Lecture, will be introduced by TC president Susan Fuhrman. His speech will be followed by a question-and-answer session with the audience, which will include Teachers College faculty and students, as well as New York City public school teachers, politicians and others.
Earlier this month, Teachers College was selected by the U.S. Department of Education to receive $9.75 million, five-year federal grant that will fund a new Teaching Residents Program at the College. The program will recruit academically talented, diverse individuals from under-represented groups – for example, returning Peace Corps volunteers, veterans from the Armed Forces, and mid-career changers—and transform them into exemplary, highly qualified teachers who can capably meet the needs of children and youth in high-need, urban school districts such as New York City.
Duncan will deliver another address earlier that day at the Children’s Aid Society (CAS) conference being held in the Cowin Center at Teachers College, (147 Horace Mann) at 10am. His topic at the CAS conference will be community schools as a strategy for organizing community resources around student success. Following his introduction, a panel of national leaders will discuss how their sectors can support that vision.
There are a limited number of seats available for the Lerner Hall event. Holders of valid Columbia University ID's can come to the Broadway entrance of Lerner Hall (at 114th st) to attend the event. Seating is on a first come first serve basis.
