Alumna Awarded Fulbright Scholarship

Ashley Esser, who will spend a year in Italy teaching English as a Foreign Language, is one of some 1,500 U.S. citizens who will travel abroad for the 2009-2010 academic year though the prestigious scholarship program.
Ashley Esser, who received her master’s degree in literacy education at Teachers College in May, has been awarded a Fulbright scholarship to Italy to teach English as a Foreign Language.

Esser is one of more than 1,500 Americans who will travel abroad for the 2009-2010 academic year through the Fulbright Student Program. Recipients of the Fulbright awards are chosen based on academic and professional achievement, as well as demonstrated leadership potential in their fields.

At TC, Esser was a research assistant and a fellow at the Reading and Writing Project, and also served as a substitute teacher in the New York City public schools during the spring of 2009. She was a literacy intern at PS 99 and PS 11. Esser received her bachelor’s degree in elementary education and art history from Vanderbilt University.
