Supporting National Standards

Following the release of proposed national educational standards, TC Professors Margaret Crocco and Anand Marri voice support in a New York Times column for the so-called Common Core Standard as a "step in the right direction" in providing access to high-quality curriculum for all students.
On September 21, a group of experts released a first draft of proposed educational standards in English and mathematics that all students should meet by the end of high school. The Common Core Standards is an initiative of the National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers.

In the “Room for Debate” forum on the New York Times Web site, Margaret Crocco, Professor and Chair of the Department of Arts and Humanities, and Anand Marri, Assistant Professor of Social Studies and Education, support the development of common educational standards, arguing that “their very existence should be seen as promising by all the educators, employers, policymakers, school and government officials, parents and students who, during the past decade, have articulated their desire for ‘rigorous and challenging curriculum.’”

Crocco and Marri write that the standards “are a step in the right direction” in providing all students a high-quality curriculum. The TC professors are one of five educators and scholars who weigh in both in favor and against the standards.
