A new study by TC's Aaron Pallas and Columbia PhD Jennifer Jennings suggests that higher graduation rates from newer small schools in New York City are misleading. They don't take into account the differences in who attends them, compared to the larger schools they replaced, Pallas told the New York Daily News and GothamSchools.com. Students who enter small schools are more likely to be reading and doing math at grade level, less likely to be special education students, more likely to be female and more likely to qualify for free lunch, Pallas and Jennings found.
