TC to Host Conference on Spirituality and Healing
Experts in the fields of medicine, engineering, psychology and spirituality, will discuss their work studying the effect of mental and spiritual activity on the body and the physical environment.
The connection of consciousness to human sciences will be the topic of a conference at Teachers College on November 19 from 4 to 6 p.m. in Milbank Chapel, organized by Lisa Miller, Associate Professor of Psychology and Education.
At the conference, entitled, “Spirituality and Healing: A Revolution of Consciousness,” experts in the fields of medicine, engineering, psychology and spirituality, will discuss their work studying the effect of mental and spiritual activity on the body and the physical environment. Miller said she organized the conference because she believes that this connection should be studied in K-12 and college-level science classes, including environmental studies.
“In the old scientific model, the brain creates spirituality. In the new model, spirituality exists on its own, and the brain works like an antenna that picks up on spiritual information,” Miller says. “We need to revise education to include this. You don’t see a trace of their work in the average college curriculum.”
The following speakers are among the twelve who will participate in the conference:
- Larry Dossey, M.D.: Author of Healing Words and the Power of Premonitions; editor of Explore: The Journal of Science and Healing
- Amit Goswami Ph.D.: Author of The Self-Aware Universe, Physics With a Soul, and Spiritual Activism
- Robert G. Jahn, Ph.D.: Dean Emeritus of the School of Engineering and Applied Science, Princeton University; author, with Brenda Dunne, of Margins of Reality and Consciousness & the Source of Reality
- Wayne B. Jonas, M.D.: Former Director of the Office of Alternative Medicine at the National Institutes of Health
- Lisa Miller, Ph.D.: Editor, Oxford University Press Handbook of Psychology and Spirituality, Columbia University, Teachers College
Admission to the conference is free, thanks to funding from Jill Joanne Hankey as well as the generosity of the scientists and healers in sharing their time and ideas. Work by the twelve contributors will be published by Oxford University Press in the upcoming Handbook of Psychology and Spirituality, edited by Lisa Miller.
