Alumna Harriet Fayne Named Dean of Lehman College School of Education
Fayne, who holds master's of arts and master's of education degrees from Teachers College, Columbia University, where she also earned her PhD in educational psychology, effective August 1 is leading Lehman, a college of the City University of New York which offers undergraduate programs leading to state teaching certification, as well as graduate programs in fields including early childhood education, counseling, leadership, literacy, middle and high school education, and special education.
A skilled administrator with more than thirty years of experience in higher education, Dr. Fayne served most recently at Otterbein University in Westerville, Ohio, where she was dean of the School of Professional Studies, as well as interim dean of its Graduate School.
"We are very pleased to have such an accomplished scholar and leader in higher education serve in the role of dean at Lehman," said Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Mary Papazian. "Dr. Fayne brings with her a wealth of experience that will help to expand the School so that faculty research and student achievement can be equally supported."
Dr. Fayne has led initiatives to improve scholarship, expand community partnerships, and fostered institutional growth. As dean of the School of Professional Studies, she oversaw five practitioner departments—Business/Accounting/Economics, Education, Nursing, Health/Sports Sciences, and Equine Science—and was responsible for managing budgets in excess of $7 million, as well as fifty-seven full-time faculty. Under her leadership, the School codified policies and identified opportunities across the campus to expand graduate offerings.
Previously, as chair of Otterbein's Education Department for sixteen years, she added two graduate programs—the first to be offered at the University—and significantly increased its number of full-time faculty. She also had served as the director of the University's Reading/Study Center and associate dean of Academic Affairs.
Dr. Fayne holds a B.A. from Barnard College, an M.A.T. from Harvard University, an M.A. and M.Ed. from Teachers College, Columbia University, and a Ph.D. in educational psychology from Columbia University. She succeeds Dr. Deborah Eldridge, who left Lehman at the end of June to become senior vice president for NCATE (National Council on the Accreditation of Teacher Education) in Washington, D.C.
"I am both excited and honored to have the opportunity to serve as the inaugural Dean of the School of Education," said Dean Fayne. "Lehman has a proud history of preparing teachers, counselors and administrators, who make a critical difference in the lives of children, and adolescents. In addition to our academic programs, we have three institutes that help us to realize our mission by serving the Bronx in very powerful ways. I look forward to working collaboratively with outstanding professionals within the School, the College, and the community."
The Lehman College School of Education offers undergraduate programs leading to initial state certification, as well as graduate programs in fields including early childhood and childhood education, counseling, leadership, literacy, middle and high school education, and special education. It currently enrolls more than 1,450 students in its programs, which have been accredited by NCATE since 2002. Its school counseling program is also accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP).
Lehman College is a senior college of The City University of New York, located in the borough of the Bronx, and enrolls more than 12,000 students from over 100 nations. It is currently celebrating the 80th anniversary of its historic campus.
