Jeffrey Sachs Will Keynote TC's Academic Festival in April

Global economist Jeffrey Sachs will headline TC's fourth annual Academic Festival, themed "Rewiring the Learning Landscape," on Saturday, April 21st.
Global economist Jeffrey Sachs will headline TC’s fourth annual Academic Festival, themed “Rewiring the Learning Landscape,” on Saturday, April 21st.

The full-day, on-campus event will feature faculty, alumni and students in interactive sessions that explore the intersection of technology and humanity in education, computing, the arts, psychology, nutrition and leadership.

Sachs, Director of The Earth Institute at Columbia University and author of The Price of Civilization: Reawakening American Virtue and Prosperity, will deliver a keynote address titled “Information Technology and Sustainable Development.” Matthew Pittinsky (PhD ’08), recipient of TC’s 2012 President’s Medal of Excellence, will discuss “Entrepreneurship, Technology and Education” during a plenary session moderated by Tom James, Provost.

The day will also include programming for all ages with a WeBop! session for young children ages eight months to five years, and Kids Cooking Class for kids six and up with their parents. Academic Festival will also provide the opportunity for alumni networking throughout the day.

A group of distinguished TC alumni will be honored by the College, including Kevin Jennings (MA '94), CEO of the non-profit Be The Change and former Assistant Deputy Secretary for the Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools at the U.S. Department of Education; Lucille Ann Joel (EdD '70), Professor, Rutgers College of Nursing; John King (EdD '08), New York State Commissioner of Education; Harold Noah (PhD '64), TC Professor Emeritus and Dean;  Robert Schaffer (MA '52), a pioneer in the field of college student personnel and student affairs, and Early Career Award recipient Betty Perez-Rivera (EdD '03), Director of the East Harlem Asthma Center of Excellence at the New York City Department of Health; Pola Rosen (EdD ’80), Publisher of Education Update; Matthew Pittinsky (PhD ’08) co-founder of Blackboard and CEO of Parchment, Inc.
