Jill Jayne (MS '08) is the country's only Rockstar Nutritionist. She is the leading expert in creating and delivering interactive media about health to kids and families. Jill is the creator of the rock 'n roll nutrition show and CD Jump with Jill and the Nutrition Rock Invasion teacher toolkit. Jump with Jill takes childhood obesity by storm, serving as a kid-appropriate approach for kicking off wellness committee initiatives, reinforcing classroom learning, and supporting a healthier cafeteria menu. Performed for over 250,000 kids across the United States and Europe, Jump with Jill has been featured on Sprout PBS, Nickelodeon, The Washington Post, NPR, and the White House lawn. Jump with Jill is now heading on tour in Michigan. Jill's knack for rock & roll nutrition is the result of being a registered dietitian mixed with her musical experience as lead singer-songwriter of her rock band Sunset West. Beacon Hill International School Principal Kelly Aramaki (MA '99) was named the 2013 Washington State Elementary School Principal of the Year by a panel of principals representing the Elementary School Principals Association of Washington (ESPAW), a component of the Association of Washington School Principals (AWSP). Aramaki was one of three finalists chosen from a field of 18 statewide nominees. Aramaki learned of the news at a surprise school assembly. Aramaki will be honored this fall in Washington D.C. as part of the National Distinguished Principal of the Year program, which is sponsored by the National Association of Elementary School Principals in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Education and VALIC.

In this year's Tisch lecture, Howell Wechsler (EdD '96) called on TC and other schools of education to embrace health as part of their mission. TC Deputy Provost John Allegrante (left) has been named to the Board of Scientific Counselors for the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Allegrante, who is also Professor of Health Education, was notified by letter from Kathleen Sibelius, U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services. His appointment, which is effective immediately, will run through the end of August 2016. Read the full story here.

Celebrate TC's 125th by becoming a '125 Dewey!'
The month of April offers you a fine opportunity to celebrate TC's 125th Anniversary in a very significant way--by becoming a new leadership donor. The John Dewey Circle, TC's leadership giving society, brings together our most generous and loyal alumni and friends who support the College through a yearly contribution of $1,000 or more to the Annual Fund. These leadership gifts are a vital mainstay of our operating budget and allow us to keep pioneering bold new ideas that shape how people develop and learn. As we focus on providing more financial aid packages to students this year, the College is seeking to grow the John Dewey Circle by 125 new members. Sky High - No Goal Is Out of Your Reach by Major General Irene Trowell-Harris (EdD '83) Raised in 1950s South Carolina, faced with the barriers of race, gender and economic status, it all started with $60 and a dream. Her church collected nickels, dimes and quarters for her initial $60 tuition for nursing school. While picking cotton with her 10 brothers and sisters, when planes flew over, she'd tell them 'one day I will fly and work on an airplane'. And she did. Trowell-Harris spend thirty-eight years in the Air Force/Air National Guard, and retired as Major General.It is a simple story of faith and determination-and how if you have that, no goal is out of your reach.

Ace the SAT Essay: How to Master the Timed Writing Process by Dana L. Lebo(PhD '94)
As a successful psychologist and writing teacher, Lebo observed that students who write effective essays achieve insight during the writing process. And it is this moment of insight a special form of seeing that enables them to write in the zone. Ace the SAT Essay will empower students to produce an above-average essay. Unlike other texts on writing or SAT preparation, this book will show young people how an understanding of psychology can enhance how they write and what they say.

April 17 - Perkins Platform Radio Show: Second Battle of New Orleans
Before Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans had some of the worst schools in the nation, rapid superintendent turnover, and a human resources and financial crisis leaving over $3 million in salary and benefits being paid to deceased employees. After Katrina, the city underwent several drastic shifts with the most prominent being the decentralization of the education system and the creation of one of the largest charter school networks in country. Our guests in March are educators (to be announced) who have served before and after Hurricane Katrina in district and charter schools. We will learn candidly about what happened in New Orleans then and now and get a sense of what politicians, community leaders and state policy makers are still fighting about in one of our historic cultural centers. Join us for another dynamic discussion with those on the front line in what will be known in the history books as the Second Battle of New Orleans.

The Encyclopedia of Diversity in Education, edited by James A. Banks (left), is the most comprehensive reference work related to diversity published to date. It contains 700 articles written by noted scholars in the United States and around the world. In the book launch of this publication, the editor of the volume as well as the group of scholars on the faculty of TC who contributed to the Encyclopedia will discuss key issues in diversity that are based on the articles they wrote for the Encyclopedia. Columbia University Center for Career Education Volunteer Opportunities
Alumni across the US: As part of our efforts to help students develop their professional networks, the Columbia University Internship Network (CUIn) connects current CU students with alumni mentors during the summer. We are seeking alumni in several cities during the summer of 2013 to be available as a resource to the student and possibly attend an event or two. If you live in one of the following cities - Boston, Greater Los Angeles area, San Francisco/Bay area, Washington, DC, Chicago - and are interested in mentoring students during the summer of 2013, please share your interest with Malla Haridat CC'97 at vh19@columbia.edu.

International Alumni: Through the Columbia Experience Overseas Program, Columbia students participate in 8 week high quality internships. Since 2007, the Center for Career Education has been partnering with employers and alumni in a variety of international cities. Over 100 students depart from Morningside Heights to intern in a diverse range of industries including finance, consulting, media, health care, arts and not for profit organizations. If you live in one of the following cities - Amman, Beijing, Hong Kong, London, Istanbul, Mumbai, Shanghai, Singapore - and are interested in mentoring students over the summer, please share your interest with Malla Haridat, CC'97 at vh19@columbia.edu. Serving as a mentor is a great way to connect with current Columbia students, build the Columbia brand and help young people at the start of their careers!

Champion Columbia students at your Firm
We are seeking Columbia alumni who would like to champion the hiring of Columbia students at their respective firms and companies. Alumni understand the value of the Columbia educational experience and are critical for establishing relationships with hiring decision-makers. Our Employer Outreach team is interested in gathering relevant contacts and making introductions to hiring managers as well as meeting alumni who would like to promote the hiring of Columbia talent at their firm.
