Professor of Health Education

Barbara Wallace

Barbara Wallace is Professor of Health Education at Teachers College and Founding Co-Director of the College's Center for Health Equity and Urban Science Education (CHEUSE) in TC’s Department of Health and Behavior Studies

As a medical center psychologist in Brooklyn during the height of the crack cocaine epidemic, Wallace pioneered an original treatment approach for crack addiction and helped to launch the region’s first specialized crack treatment unit. She has since argued that research on health disparities on diverse populations must avoid a “deficit-oriented” approach.

Wallace is an authority on health education, multilingualism and multiculturism; and violence and crime. Her many books include Toward Equity in Health: A New Global Approach to Health Disparities (2008); HIV/AIDS Peer Education Training Manual: Combining African Healing Wisdom and Evidence-Based Approaches to Behavior Change (2005); and Making Mandated Addiction Treatment Work (2005).
