Theresa Ja-Young Kim (EdM '06), founded a non-profit summer camp called Hamptons Music Sessions (HMS) for music education and outreach for underprivileged students. Kim's shares her latest exciting achievement- "we will be hosting two students from Afghanistan at HMS! As you can imagine, this was not an easy feat and it involved much discussion and approval from the embassies, but I am so proud to announce that we're making it all happen. We have been raising funds to be able to provide them with full scholarships and travel stipends, and they will be joined by our other fabulous outreach students from Tunisia and inner-city NYC public schools where music funding is cut." Tom Halsall (EdD '73) is being honored this spring with a solo art show at Westchester Community College’s Fine Arts Gallery. Halsall has served as an art professor at Westchester Community College for the past 40 years. The solo show will include 25 of Halsall’s paintings. Daniel Falk (MA '11) is the new owner and president of Camp Huntington, a co-ed residential program serving children and young adults with Autism and related developmental disabilities. Camp Huntington is the second oldest summer camp program of its kind in the US. Click here for more information on Falk and Camp Huntington.

Carol Burris (EdD '03), who has been a passionate advocate for challenging curricula for all of her students at South Side High School in Rockville Centre, NY, as well as an outspoken critic of reforms in New York State, has been named New York State’s new High School Principal of the Year. TC at AERA
Some 172 faculty, students and others affiliated with Teachers College presented at "Education and Poverty: Theory, Research, Policy and Praxis," this year's meeting of the American Educational Research Association (AERA), which was held in San Francisco from April 27-May 1. TC Represented in American Academy of Arts and Sciences
TC Professor of Psychology and Education Barbara Tversky - an internationally recognized cognitive psychologist whose expertise includes spatial language and thinking, event perception and cognition, diagram production and comprehension, and gesture - has been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Celebrate TC's 125th by becoming a '125 Dewey!'
As we enter the month of May in our ongoing 125th Anniversary celebration, the TC Fund is grateful for and inspired by the support that our alumni and friends have displayed so far through their Dewey Circle contributions. Thanks to our Trustees offering to match dollar for dollar, all annual fund gifts of $1,000 or more, the TC Fund's Dewey Circle membership is already showing an increase of 6% over last May. We need your help to keep this momentum going! Your leadership gifts allow us to continue spearheading bold new ideas that shape human learning and development. As we focus on providing more financial aid packages to students this year, the College is seeking to grow the John Dewey Circle by 125 new members. Will you be one of them? Will you answer the call to help lead TC into the next 125 years? We hope 2013 will be your "Dewey Year"-- the year you join our more than 230 long-standing Dewey members as a new leadership donor. As you consider your contribution this month and the various options below, we hope you know how deeply your gift will impact our students and their future.

Provide a $5,000 Scholarship with a $2,500 Gift: TC Trustees will match, dollar-for dollar, your gift of $2,500 to provide a one-year $5,000 Annual Fund Scholarship to a student with demonstrated need. The Trustees will contribute up to $125,000 in this effort. The scholarship will be named in your honor, and you will also receive recognition in our Annual Report as a John Dewey Circle Member - at the Scholars Circle level.

Double the Value of Your John Dewey Circle Membership: With the goal of growing the John Dewey Circle by 125 members this anniversary year, our Trustees will match dollar-for-dollar, new or renewed Dewey level gifts of $1,000 or more, up to $125,000.

Academic Festival 2013

Opening Ceremony and Keynote Address

The fifth annual iteration of the College’s signature homecoming event -- themed “Celebrating a Tradition for Tomorrow” in recognition of TC’s 125th anniversary -- was designed to “reflect our goal to honor and advance the TC legacy for generations to come,” said TC President Susan Fuhrman in her opening remarks. “There are so many fields that started here at TC -- but the future is why we’re here today. As we reflect on TC’s ‘legacy of firsts’, we also look ahead to how TC will continue to lead in the 21st century. Our goal is to do nothing less than invent the future. Just as we helped shaped the 19th and 21st centuries, we’ll do so with the 21st.” Ellen Condliffe Lagemann (PhD ’78), Levy Research Professor, Bard College, who was receiving TC’s 2013 President’s Medal of Excellence. Lagemann delivered the day’s keynote address, then spoke on the legacy of Cremin, who served as her thesis advisor during her student days at TC.

Plenary Session
At an afternoon plenary session, TC: The Next Generation, included four TC professors who are carrying forward the innovative traditions that have distinguished TC for more than a century. The interdisciplinary lineup included Karen Froud, Associate Professor of Speech and Language Pathology, a linguist and neuroscientist who uses real-time imaging techniques to study what goes on inside the brain when people learn; Lisa Miller, Professor of Professor of Psychology and Education, who explores the beneficial effects of spirituality on brain development and psychological health; Christopher Emdin, Assistant Professor of Science Education, who uses elements of hip-hop to teach high school science; and digital game designer Joey Lee, Assistant Professor of Communication, Computing Technology in Education, who uses gamification techniques to engage learners and foster concern for the environment and other pressing societal issues.

Breakout Sessions
A full slate of morning and afternoon panel discussions that, in addition to the sessions mentioned above, included a talk by alumna Dr. Ruth Westheimer, the sex therapist and media personality, about her escape as a child from Nazi Germany and her subsequent early years in Switzerland and Israel; a conversation with alumnae Alice Wilder and Angela Santomero, the creators of the hit children’s television show “Blue’s Clues”; and a class on watercolor painting.

Distinguished Alumni Award Luncheon
Presentation of the College’s Distinguished Alumni and Early Career Awards took place during a special luncheon to a diverse cast that included Jody Gottfried Arnhold (MA '73), Founding Director of the Dance Education Laboratory, 92nd Street Y; Susan Jay Spungin (EdD ’75), President, Blind Biz; Chong Yang Kim (EdD '83), Chairman of the Board, Hanyang University Foundation; Bobby Susser (MA '87), renowned American songwriter, performer and record producer. The Early Career Award Recipients are Sarah Bolson Barnett (MA '09), Associate Vice President for Foundation Relations at The New York Botanical Garden and lastly a posthumous presentation to the the parents of Sreyashi Jhumki Basu (PhD '06) former professor of Science Education at New York University. Erika Himmel (MA '59), Professor, Department of Education, University of Chile was unable to attend.
