Ruth Vinz
Ruth Vinz is Enid & Lester Morse Chair and Program Coordinator, English Education, at Teachers College, and current Chair of TC's Department of Arts and Humanities. A former high school teacher, Vinz is the author of Composing a Teaching Life, Becoming (Other)Wise (with Erick Gordon and Bill Lundgren) and On Narrative Inquiry: Approaches to Language and Literacy (with Donald Schaafsma). The Morse Center for Professional Education of Teachers, which Vinz founded and directs, is home to the Student Press Initiative, the Creativity, Imagination and Innovation Symposium, the Secondary Literacy Institute (SLI) and and other innovative efforts that help students become skilled writers and understand themselves better through literature. SLI has worked with 30 high schools in New York City to create "DYOs" (for "develop your own") alternative interim assessments that are aligned with the schools' curricula rather than conducted through standardized tests provided by the city.
