Jane Katz (EdD ’78) recently won 13 medals at the Maccabiah Games. Most importantly, Katz won a gold medal on the US Team in the women’s freestyle relay and a silver medal in the medley relay. She has participated in every Maccabiah Game since 1957. Read More >>


George Papayannis (MA '03) was recently awarded a Wipro Science Education Fellowship for the 2013-2015 school years. The two-year fellowship supports experienced teachers to improve science instruction and increase teacher leadership in their districts. Papayannis currently teaches physics, biology, and chemistry at Fenway High School in the Boston Public Schools and will continue to do so during the duration of the fellowship.


Stan Salett (MA '63) has first hand experience of the "March on Washington" in 1963 as a member of its orignal organizing committee. He is featured on MSNBC's show, Disrupt, with Laura Finney here. He is also the author of The Edge of Politics: Stories from the Civil Rights Movement, the War on Poverty & the Challenges of School Reform. (More information in Bookshelf section below.)

Gamification Expert Joey Lee Receives TC's Strage Prize
Joey Lee, Assistant Professor of Communication, Computing and Technology in Education, is the recipient of the 2012 Strage Junior Faculty Prize. Created in 2009, the prize supports the production of a short video to highlight outstanding work by the recipient from the previous calendar year that best reflects innovative thinking in educational research and education. As an alternative to the malnourished conception of education that increasingly permeates our schools, the Columbia University Philosophy Outreach aims to provide an enriching educational experience for New York City students and court-involved youth. The Philosophy Outreach- a vital student-run partnership between the Philosophy and Education department at TC and the Philosophy department at GSAS-is predicated on the conviction that engagement with philosophy can foster intellectual curiosity. Professor Emerita Maxine Greene has been a the forefront of educational philosophy for almost half a century as a teacher, lecturer and author. Aurélie Athan (PhD '11) (along with TC's Lisa Miller) published "Motherhood as Opportunity to Learn Spiritual Values: Experiences and Insights of New Mothers" within the The Journal of Prenatal and Perinatal Psychology and Health 27 (4), 220. Athan is a Full-Time Lecturer and Program Coordinator of the Masters Program in the Department of Clinical Psychology at TC, where she also co-founded the Sexuality, Women & Gender Project. She studies the transition to motherhood as a unique developmental phase within the female lifespan: www.maternalpsychology.org

Stan Salett (MA '63) authored a book titled, The Edge of Politics: Stories from the Civil Rights Movement, the War on Poverty & the Challenges of School Reform. Salett has more than four decades of experience designing and leading breakthrough national initiatives in social policy and education. He has served on the staff of all three Kennedy brothers. In the early 1960s Salett was an organizer for CORE, the Congress of Racial Equality, and helped in the organization of the March on Washington.

Helen Rippier Wheeler (EdD '64) authored a book titled The Truth Must Dazzle Gradually: A Memoir. Wheeler is a feminist and Berkeley resident who has taught Women Studies. From 1973-93 she ran Womanhood Media, a consulting firm. In 1984 she was a visiting scholar in Women Studies in Japan.

TC Week
TC Week was a success, and we are so happy to have our alumni, students, faculty and staff come together to continue to celebrate our 125th Anniversary.

We kicked off the week with the co-naming of 120th Street. President Fuhrman, said from atop a double decker bus that served as a stage, “The new sign co-naming our street says it all: Teachers College Way. So many big thinkers and doers have walked this street, and we all walk in their footsteps. And now we’re all working together with our neighbors toward a brighter future. And that really is the TC way.”

Later that day, sporting her “TC” baseball jersey, President Fuhrman literally took a festive group of TC students, alumni, faculty, and staff out to the old ball game at Yankee Stadium.

The TC Community also participated in that most primal of all Gotham rituals: getting on camera at The Today Show. Armed with TC signs, banners and pom-poms and wearing white “TC Week” t-shirts, the students – led by Bobby Cox, the new TC Student Senate President, and Tom Rock, Executive Director of Enrollment Services – were on a mission to spread the word about TC’s 125th anniversary celebration

September 10-13 - Mini Moments with Big Thinkers featuring A. Lin Goodwin
As the school year gets underway, it's worth asking: why do we expect new teachers to teach like veterans? Holding new doctors or lawyers to such a standard would be absurd. In this week's installment of Mini-Moments with Big Thinkers, Lin Goodwin argues for broader adoption of the medical residency-style teacher prep program she has created at Teachers College.

The Spirituality Mind Body Institute Presents:Urban Monk: Exploring Karma, Consciousness, and the Divine- A Book Talk with Gadadhara Pandit Dasa. Written from the heart, this book is a truly beautiful and inspirational account of Pandit's life story and what it is like to be a monk in New York City. This book is a reflection of spiritual life in the 21st century, showing that one really can find a spiritual haven in 'the big apple.' September 18 - The Perkins Platform
This month's broadcast features, Nancy Meador, President - National Association of Elementary School Principals. Nancy most recently served as principal for Madison Middle School in Nashville, Tennessee, has enjoyed a long career in education, serving in elementary and middle schools as a principal, assistant principal, classroom teacher, and as executive director for learning support services. We will focus on the trends in education to meet the new needs of students who entering our public schools. These students don't know a world without cell phones, FaceBook or Twitter. Technology and findings from brain research have greatly influenced teaching and learning in today's elementary schools.Nancy's role as the president of nation's largest professional organization of elementary and middle school principals is influential in shaping how leadership challenges are met.

September 19 - Advanced Organizational Development: Guiding Organizations through Permanent Whitewater
Classic approaches to change management were designed over fifty years ago to manage one change at a time, in a linear fashion. In case you missed it, that's not the world we live in today. Even John Kotter, author of one of the most widely used change models in existence, says that it's time to throw our old-fashioned linear models out the window. What we need is an approach to change that lets us deal with multiple changes simultaneously, on a continuous basis. September 25 - Salute to TC’s Impact on Psychology: A tribute to Albert Ellis and our Psychology Luminaries
Teachers College has been a place for psychological exploration and cognitive studies for most of our 125 year history – and as such has been the breeding ground for many luminaries who have shaped the modern field of psychology into what it is today. This September marks the birth centennial of one such notable: Albert Ellis. After studying at TC, Ellis went on to become the father of cognitive-behavioral therapy and founder of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), discovering that people’s beliefs strongly affected their emotional functioning. By the time he passed at age 93, Ellis had become considered by some as more influential than Freud. This evening will be a tribute to his impact in the field of psychology, as well as an opportunity for Teachers College to recognize the other luminaries as part of our 125th anniversary celebration. Provost Tom James and TC Clinical and Counseling Psychology faculty will join his wife, Dr. Debbie Joffe Ellis, who also worked alongside Ellis for many years, in this special celebration. A “birthday” reception will follow in Everett Lounge.

The event will kick off with a Career Panel featuring Careers in Organizational Development followed by the networking component to be held in the Horace Mann 1st Floor Rooms. TCCS, partnering with OHDCC, is hosting this event in order for students and alumni to network with professionals within their field to learn more about Human Resources and Organizational Development positions that are generally available at the represented organizations. September 26 - Is Education Possible Today? - A Lecture by David Hansen
David Hansen’s Weinberg lecture will pose the question whether education is possible today. He will begin by addressing three prevalent responses to the question: (1) that it is obviously possible since we can see all around us teachers and students working in classrooms, (2) that it is obviously not possible because the educational system has been subverted to serve the economic ends of a global capitalist order, and (3) that education remains possible because of the inextinguishable human quest for meaning even in the face of unjust societal conditions. Hansen will argue that while there is evidence to support the three responses, they all in effect dismiss the question of education’s possibility and thus undermine its authentic enactment. Hansen will suggest that the question of education is the one question we need to keep open in order to ensure the continuation of education itself.

October 18 - 19 - Fall Seminar: "On the Future of Anthropology in Schools of Education"
The Programs in Applied Anthropology and Anthropology and Education at Teachers College, Columbia University are organizing a small conference bringing together faculty, alumni and graduate students to discuss the current challenges facing their field ranging from theoretical, methodological and analytical angles in an effort to continue exploring the productive tensions found at the intersection of Anthropology and Education. October 18 - 19 - Language and Social Interaction Working Group (LANSI)
LANSI brings together scholars and students working on naturally-occurring data within the broad area of language and social interaction. In keeping with the LANSI spirit of diversity and dialog, we welcome abstracts from colleagues working on a variety of topics using discourse analytic approaches that include but are not limited to conversation analysis, interactional sociolinguistics, linguistic anthropology, and critical discourse analysis. For more information, please visit www.tc.edu/lansi.

November 12 - 125th Anniversary Celebration
The Gala celebration will be held on November 12, 2013 at the legendary Apollo Theater in Harlem and we are expecting a packed house. As part of the program, we will be honoring leaders in several sectors related to education including: Laurie M. Tisch for her philanthropy and leadership, Jeffrey Immelt for his and GE’s corporate support and exemplary impact on the next generation of learners, and James P. Comer as one of the giants of school reform who has stressed the psychosocial development of children. All proceeds from the Gala will benefit TC’s scholarship fund.
