A Message from Alumni Relations  Coming off the recent Thanksgiving holiday and heading into December's many celebrations, we can't think of a more perfect time to give back. Eric Oberstein (M.A. '09) received a Latin GRAMMY Award for his production of the album, Final Night at Birdland. The live album, which won Best Instrumental Album, features Arturo O'Farrill & the Chico O'Farrill Afro Cuban Jazz Orchestra's final performance at the famed jazz club Birdland in New York City following a 15-year Sunday night residency. Alumnus Dr. Gerald R. Mack (Ed.D. '66) received the Alfred Nash Patterson Lifetime Achievement Award from Choral Arts New England for his exceptional contributions to choral singing and culture in the region. Dr. Mack is a nationally-known conductor, educator and mentor who helmed the Worcester Chorus in Massachusetts as its conductor for 28 years. He and his wife also founded the Great Waters Music Festival in Wolfeboro, NH, which just celebrated its 20th anniversary. Read More >> | 
Three TC Alumni recently assumed new leadership positions. Dr. Karennan Carty (M.A. '92) was named Vice President of Academics & Chief Academic Officer of Monroe College. Alfred "Rik" F. Dugan 3rd (M.A. '04) was appointed the second headmaster of the Princeton Academy of the Sacred Heart. And Dr. Belinda Miles (Ed.D. '04) has been named President of Westchester Community College. Eileen Marzola (Ed.D. '86) was recently honored at the Celebrate Dyslexia event at the NYU Kimmel Center for her pioneering work in the field of education for those with learning disabilities and attention deficit disorders. Marzola is also an adjunct assistant professor at TC. She is considered a foremost expert on dyslexia education in the NYC-area. In October, the Hechinger Institute hosted a panel discussion about the new book Building a Better Teacher: How Teaching Works (and How to Teach It to Everyone) by author Elizabeth Green. Featured speakers included Susan Fuhrman (Ph.D. '77), President of Teachers College; Elizabeth Green, the cofounder and CEO of Chalkbeat, former Spencer Fellow at the Columbia School of Journalism (and author of the book); and Andy Snyder, social studies teacher, Harvest Collegiate High School. Liz Willen, director of the Hechinger Institute and editor of The Hechinger Report, moderated the discussion. Watch the video, here.

TC News  Remembering Charlotte Cremin
TC Alumna Charlotte Cremin (M.A. '75) has died at age 81. Cremin was the wife of the late Pulitzer-prize winning education historian and Teachers College President Lawrence Cremin (Ph.D. '49) and the daughter of Robert Bruce Raup (Ph.D. '26), who spent nearly 40 years as Professor of Philosophy and Education at TC. Cremin established a career as a middle-school mathematics teacher while balancing and embracing her role as presidential wife and celebrated hostess. Though part of a strong family legacy at both TC and in academia, Cremin will be remembered most for her mischievousness, warmth and determination to redefine traditions.
TC Chosen as Community-Based Partner for P.S. 154
TC was chosen as one of 25 local community-based organizations to participate in a New York City community schools initiative. TC's Office of School and Community Partnerships will receive more than $266,000 per year for four years, to provide a slate of new services at P.S. 154, the Harriet Tubman elementary school in Harlem. Award-winning children's nonfiction author Amy Nathan (M.A. '80) recently released her newest title, The Music Parents' Survival Guide. The book was pronounced "worthy of a place on your bookshelf!" by American Music Teacher magazine.
Dr. Susan Smith Kuczmarski (M.E. '79) is an award-winning author and respected expert on issues regarding the contemporary family. Her newest book, Becoming a Happy Family: Pathways to the Family Soul, provides a series of exercises and tools necessary to strengthen and nourish what she calls "the family soul." It will be a helpful resource to those searching for answers to the family happiness puzzle.
Elaine Wolo (M.A. '59) has released a new children's activity book, Things to Do, for the children of Liberia, where she served as a volunteer, teacher and missionary for more than two decades. The book contains verses about seasons, colors, months of the year, farming, and holidays in the Liberian environment. Wolo will donate 10% of the book's profits to aid in the struggle against Ebola in Liberia.
