And, speaking of stars, I am pleased to announce the alumni who have been selected by their peers in the Alumni Council to receive this year's Distinguished Alumni & Early Career Awards. The following outstanding members of the TC Alumni Community will be honored at Academic Festival 2015: Christine Kim Eng Lee (Ed.D. '92), Associate Professor and Head of Curriculum, Teaching and Learning Academic Group at the National Institute of Education (NIE) in Singapore; Mildred Garcia (Ed.D. '87), President of California State University, Fullerton; Dr. Anne Gayles-Felton (M.A. '47), Professor Emeritus at the College of Education at Florida A&M University in Tallahassee; Dr. William (Bill) Howe (Ed.D. '91), State Title IX Coordinator and Education Consultant for Multicultural Education at the Connecticut State Department of Education; Robert Sherman (M.A. '53), preeminent New York broadcaster at WQXR for 58 years; and Early Career Award recipient Monisha Bajaj (Ed.D. '05), Associate Professor of International and Multicultural Education at the University of San Francisco. Harold Noah (Ph.D. '64), esteemed Faculty Emeritus and former Dean of Teachers College will Celebrate his 90th birthday in Naples, FL this month in the company of many members of our TC Community. To honor Harold and his many contributions to TC and the field of comparative education, the Prof. Harold J. Noah Endowed Scholarship in International and Comparative Education has been created. The art of alumna Honey (Hortense) Kassoy (1917-2013) (M.A. '39) will be featured in the Lasting Legacies exhibit from Longwood Arts Project, the visual arts program of the Bronx Council on the Arts (BCA). Honey Kassoy (1917-2013) was a sculptor and painter with a career spanning 74 years. She received a number of awards for sculpture, as well as First Prize in Watercolor on Painter's Day at the 1939 World's Fair. Read More >> | 
Abena Agyemang (M.A. '13) was recently named to Forbes' 30 Under 30 in Education list. Abena is the National director of school partnerships for Families For Excellent Public Schools, where she focuses on lifting charter school caps and mobilizing nearly 60,000 people for rallies throughout the year. Dr. Angela Kelly (Ph.D. '06) is Associate Professor of Physics and Associate Director of Science Education at Stony Brook University in New York. Her recent research involves her continuing work with the Bronx Institute, where she has taught physics and chemistry to urban high school students for the past six years. She also recently received grant funding to redesign an undergraduate physics classroom in the Studio Physics model, where students work collaboratively and attend lecture, laboratory, and recitation in the same setting. Dr. Kelly earned three degrees from TC and served as an adjunct instructor for six years. Read More>> |

Featured Video  Alumnus Adam Vane (M.A. '01) Receives Columbia University Alumni Medal
This fall, TC alumnus and former president of the TC Alumni Association, Adam Vane, received a Columbia Alumni Medal for his distinguished service to Columbia University and to our TC Community. Vane is managing partner of Paragon Global Consulting, LLC. He has organized a speaker series featuring leading authors and scholars from the field of leadership development, now in its 12th year. In 2003, Vane joined the TC Alumni Council and served in multiple leadership roles, including co-chair of the awards committee. TC News QRTA Holds First Regional Teachers Skills Forum
Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah of Jordan opened the Teachers Skills Forum on December 6, the first regional forum of its kind that aimed to address the most pressing needs of the educational sector in the Arab World. The two-day forum was held by the Queen Rania Teachers Academy (QRTA) and was attended by more than 700 educators from Jordan and the Arab world. The QRTA was launched five years ago in collaboration with Teachers College, offering ongoing professional development opportunities for educators. Read More >>
Dr. Susan Lowes' Research is Basis for New Learning App
TC's Dr. Susan Lowes, Adjunct Associate Professor of Computing & Education and Director of Research and Evaluation for the Institute for Learning Technologies, has provided the research basis for a new geography learning app, GeoGames. The app was recently released by global education nonprofit Reach the World (RTW) and will be offered in both free and paid versions by ZuriApps. Pam Koch (Ed.D. '00) weighed in on Meatless Monday - the national campaign to go vegetarian on Mondays to help reduce our carbon footprint in February's Men's Health Magazine and penned an op-ed for the Huffington Post in October calling for increased support for nutrition education, particularly in light of the upcoming Child Nutrition Act Reauthorization. Two areas of Charles Basch's research regarding the links between student health and classroom performance have been widely referenced in the media of late. Basch's research has become the basis of a new Children's Health Fund initiative in NYC schools, dubbed "Healthy and Ready to Learn," which will address common health issues that impede learning, particularly among poor students (covered here by WNYC). One such issue, poor vision, and the initiative's increase in access to screening and glasses has been covered widely, including articles on EdSource and The New York Times. Basch was also quoted recently in NBC News about his research on lack of sleep and its effects on children and adolescents. |
Career Services  Save the Date for the TCCS Spring Career Fairs!
The 13th Annual Metro NY Charter School Career Fair will be held February 28. It will be an opportunity to meet hiring managers from top performing metro NYC-area public charter schools, such as Success Academy, KIPP NYC and many others. More than 50 charter school organizations will be recruiting classroom teachers, curriculum leaders and school administrators at this event.
The Education Career Fair will be on March 4. Don't miss this opportunity to meet with national school systems, independent schools, charter schools and international organizations who are seeking students, recent graduates and experienced practitioners interested in teaching, guidance/school counseling, and various educational and administrative positions.

Alumni Creations  Carol Porter (M.A. '93) recently released her newest solo piano album, "CMajor." Her music will also be featured on the new "Fresh Cuts, Vol. 10" compilation album hand-picked by the legendary Quincy Jones (available 1/20/15). Carol will perform at a free concert at Columbia's St. Paul's Chapel on February 3, 2015 at 6:00 p.m. You can read more about Carol's album and upcoming shows here.
Elaine Freed Lindenblatt (M.A. '63) has written Stop at the Red Apple about her family's 50+-year restaurant on NY Route 17. The Red Apple Rest, located midway between New York City and the Catskill Mountain resort area, served over a million patrons annually. The book is comprised of a series of lively vignettes enhanced with photos, memorabilia, and even a closely guarded recipe. It is an entertaining, only-in-America success story of a unique food operation. 
Helen Rippier Wheeler (Ed.D. '64) has published a book, The Truth Must Dazzle Gradually, a memoir chronicling her first 20 years as an unwanted "only" child entrusted by the legal system in 1920s and 1930s America to a divorcing female parent. Dr. Fay Maureen Butler (Ed.D. '06) published her book, Bread Crumbs Volume 1: Inspirational Thoughts and Motivational Quotes; 30 Days of Daily Bread in 2014. It contains motivational thoughts and inspirational quotes from the heart of the author, meant to inspire her readers with her own experiences, ability to persevere, her hope for the future, and faith.
