TC's Global Competence Certificate is the Subject of Huffington Post Global Education Blog
Blogger Cathy M. Rubin did question-and-answer sessions with William Gaudelli, Associate Professor of Social Studies and Education at Teachers College; Dana Mortenson, co-founder and Executive Director of World Savvy; and Jessica Kehayes at Asia Society.
The Global Competence Certificate program is for K-12 teachers who want to enhance their ability to cultivate global competence and citizenship among their students. In a program launched in September 2014, teachers will take both synchronous and asynchronous online classes, and work and live abroad for two to three weeks this summer. After returning, they will work collaboratively to develop a capstone project that supports implementation of global competence education.
Teachers who complete the 15-month program will earn a Certificate in Global Competence plus either 48 Continuing Education Units or 12 Graduate Credits.
"So often - regardless of where students are from - they tend to stay in their neighborhoods, and in groups that are known and familiar to them," write Gaudelli and Mortenson in the Q & A. "Opportunities that allow students to work together, sharing perspectives and solving problems across those divides, are invaluable to build global competence."
