The honors continue for the extended TC community at the 2015 annual meeting of the American Educational Research Association.

In two previous stories, we also reported on honors at AERA for faculty, faculty emeriti and students.

In the first story, we featured Christopher Emdin, Celia Genishi, Yolanda Sealey-Ruiz, Judith Scott-Clayton, and Elizabeth Tipton, as well as as alumnus Jared Boyce and current student Esther Ohito.

In the second story, we featured Alex Bowers, Jeffrey Henig and Stacey Robbins.

Amy Stuart Wells, Professor of Sociology & Education, was one of two scholars at this year’s annual meeting at the American Educational Research Association (AERA) to receive a special citation from the Association’s President, Jeanne Oakes.

Wells was honored for her exemplary research on the intersection of culture, racial politics, and educational policy. The citation recognizes Wells’ “extraordinary contributions to sociological knowledge about how education policies connect with cultural concerns over race, social stratification, and access to high-quality schooling.” The TC sociologist was singled out for “investigating how culture, ideology, and racial politics affect educational policy making, implementation, and the structures, opportunities, and outcomes that follow” and for “rigorous qualitative case study methods that demonstrate “how the perpetuation of racial inequality in schools is part of a broader, often sub-conscious, ideology that constrains a broader realization of racial justice.” 

Also at AERA, Mara Simon, a doctoral student working with Laura Azzarito, Associate Professor of Physical Education, in TC’s program in Physical Education in the Department of Biobehavioral Sciences, received the Lawrence F. Locke Graduate Student Award for Outstanding Paper from the Research on Learning and Instruction in Physical Education special interest group. Simon, a physical education teacher at New York City’s Trevor Day School, titled her paper “Singled out because of skin color...”: Exploring ethnic-minority female teachers’ embodiment in physical education.
