TC's Huerta Questions the Terms of a Contract between California Virtual Academy at San Mateo and Virginia-based K12 Inc.
According to a story in the San Jose Mercury News, records show that California's largest network of online academies, while set up like typical charter schools, were established and are run by Virginia-based company "whose claims of parental involvement and independent oversight appear to be a veneer for the moneymaking enterprise." Luis Huerta, TC Associate Professor of Education & Public Policy. Huerta, who reviewed the terms of the contract between California Virtual Academy at San Mateo and the company, K12, says the arrangement "raises questions about why a truly independent board of directors would ever agree to the terms."
