TC's Rebell: Detroit Literacy Case May Have National Implications
In a Detroit News article, TC's Michael Rebell is quoted as saying that a pending literacy case before Detroit's federal bench could have a profound legal impact on public education in Detroit and beyond if appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court. The case is one of two before the federal court claiming that children have a fundamental right to an education. One argues that broad conditions in Detroit public schools are so poor (lack of books, classrooms without teachers, inadequate and unsafe facilities) that children are prevented from learning how to read--a necessary skill to participate in a democracy.
