…and the performers were right on tap

There was plenty of pomp and circumstance at TC’s 2016 Convocation ceremonies – and lots of other music, too, much of it provided by current and graduating students and, in one notable instance, an alumna who is also a member of the College’s Board of Trustees.

At Monday’s master’s degree ceremony, a group of graduating Music & Music Education master’s degree students performed "Sounds Like Somewhere", by Lily & Madeleine. They were: Lindsay Burstedt (vocals); Ashley Chambers (piano); Jung In Ji (Cello); Sarah Kang (vocals); and Jameelah Taylor (vocals).

Tuesday morning’s master’s ceremony featured a Cross-Cultural Medley, arranged by Katy Ho (Ed.M., Music & Music Education), and Xiaohang Li (M.A., Music & Music Education), and performed by Ho on the viola and Li on the piano.

Tuesday afternoon’s master’s ceremony featured a vocal ensemble performing “How Can I Keep from Singing,” conducted by Ed.D. candidate in Music and Music Education Shulamit Hoffman, and accompanied on piano by Markus Ling, Ed.M. candidate in Music and Music Education.

The doctoral hooding ceremony included several musical performances, including a medley consisting of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “You’ve Got to Be Carefully Taught,” and Stephen Sondheim’s “Children Will Listen,” with vocals performed by Music and Music & Education Ed.D. candidate Judy Lewis and Andrea Maas, who was receiving her Ed.D. from the same program. Both songs deal with the sometimes unintended messages children absorb from their encounters with adults.

After the graduates in attendance each participated in the traditional ritual in which the hoods for their specific degrees were placed over their academic robes by a faculty member, TC Trustee Edith Shih (M.A. ’77, M.E. ’78) performed the classic song, “Over the Rainbow.”
