Diverse Issues in Higher Ed: Doctoral Grad Adjapong and Mentor Emdin Share Love of Hip-hop and Science
For Dr. Christopher Emdin, watching his former student, Edmund Adjapong, receive his doctoral hood from Teachers College in a ceremony on May 17 was one of the most rewarding moments of his life. The two men share a love of science, teaching and finding innovative ways to engage students of color by using hip-hop and urban culture to forge a connection to the subject matter.
Diverse Issues in Higher Education features a story about how Emdin mentored Adjapong, who pursued this dream of becoming a science teacher by coming to Teachers College as a Peter Greeman scholarship student. The newly minted professor has taken Emdin's concepts and refined and expanded them in his own is a sixth-grade classroom in the Bronx.
