Bimanual Training & Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS)
This study explores whether combining bimanual training with non-invasive brain stimulation can improve hand and arm function in children with hemiplegia.
What participation involves:
Bimanual therapy: 2-hour therapy sessions each day for 5 days (10 hours total). These sessions are personalized and designed to target functional goals through fun activities like board games, arts and crafts, and everyday tasks.
tDCS stimulation: The first 20 minutes of each session will include low-level brain stimulation called transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), a non-invasive technique used in over 300 children to date. Participants will be randomly assigned to receive either real or sham (placebo) stimulation.
Assessments:
- Hand and arm function will be assessed at three time points: pre-camp, post-camp, and at a 6-month follow-up
- Brain activity will be measured pre-camp using Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS). TMS uses brief magnetic pulses to safely map motor areas of the brain.
- We’ll also conduct a brain MRI pre-camp. Children can watch a show of their choice during the scan to help them feel comfortable.
This study will be performed over a 1 week period, and your child will be compensated for his/her time. Travel scholarships may be available for those who qualify.
Upcoming camp dates:
- June 27-July 1, 2026
- Other possible summer dates - contact us for details!
