Hand-Arm Bimanual Intensive Training - Including Lower Extremities (HABIT-ILE)

We are looking for participants with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) for a free study evaluating the feasibility and efficacy of Hand-Arm Bimanual Intensive Training (HABIT-ILE) + functional strength training (FST). The purpose of this study is to determine if there are significant gains and retention in functional skills, activity, and self-mastery in children with SMA receiving 90 hours of HABIT-ILE + FST.
This intensive motor skill training is provided in full-day sessions, that include structured tasks of increasing motor difficulty, as well as functional activities requiring bimanual coordination and engagement of postural or lower limb muscles.
The study will either involve a 3-week summer camp (5x/week), or 15-weeks (1 weekend day/week).
Participants will undergo 3 outcome assessments:
- Within the week prior to camp
- Within the week upon completion of camp
- Three months after completion of camp
