CITY Activities

CITY Program activities are designed to prepare school based mental health providers to provide evidence-based, culturally-informed, trauma-sensitive mental health services to culturally and linguistically diverse youth in high needs schools. As such, in addition to the typical school psychology MA/EdM program requirements, CITY trainees will:
- Engage in advanced Cognitive Behavioral Intervention for Trauma in Schools (CBITS) training
- Attend four professional development trainings per year related to CITY Program objectives with CITY partnering organizations and other providers
- Attend the Gordon Institute’s Reimagining Education Summer Institute (RESI), an annual four-day, nationally recognized, professional development institute held in NYC that includes training and dialogue on equity and racial justice. RESI occurs in the summer and is completed between trainee’s first and second year in the program.
- For their first required elective, take the CITY Seminar Course, with topics relevant to the delivery of evidence-based, culturally-informed, trauma-sensitive mental health services to culturally and linguistically diverse youth in high needs schools
- For their second required elective, select a course outside of the school psychology program that is aligned with the goals of this grant (i.e., preparing trainees for culturally relevant, trauma-informed mental health support in underserved schools).
- Participate in a CITY mentorship program to build community with fellow trainees
- During the second year of the program, complete their required school-based fieldwork placement for two full school days during the entire K-12 academic year (August-June) in partner school districts, NYC DOE District 4 and District 5.
- Periodically complete surveys about experiences, beliefs, and training.
- Sign a letter indicating commitment to working in underserved communities after their graduation.
