AI in Education Guide: Using AI for feedback

Using Generative AI for Feedback

Generative AI tools such as Chat GPT, Claude, and Google Bard have opened promising new opportunities for providing high-quality, personalized feedback to support teaching, learning, and educational projects.

These tools allow educators and students to get detailed commentary, analysis, and formative assessments on their lessons, assignments, presentations, and more by simply submitting their work as a prompt.

This page is equipped with both a Masterclass video for you to watch and also an instructional guide on using generative AI for feedback.

  • The Masterclass video will walk you through the type of feedback that exist, pros and cons for using AI for feedback, tips to get started, and examples of using AI for feedback.
  • The instructional guide will walk you through the Pros and Cons to using Generative AI for feedback and also provide a few tips on how to get started.

Pros & Cons of Using AI for Formative Assessment

Pros

Cons

  • Large Language models and AI should only be used for formative assessment. Not a Summative assessment where students will receive grades.
  • Allows students to receive timely feedback, which can allow them to brainstorm and work in an effective way.
  • AI systems are very successful at pointing out areas for improvement when prompted correctly.
  • AI cannot and will not ever be able to replicate the knowledge that instructors have of their students.
  • Can give timely feedback that helps students consider their work from an outside perspective.
  • Can assist instructors in creating various types of assessment ideas.
  • Students should have the ability to evaluate the feedback, decide what they want to incorporate, and continue to iterate on their drafts.
  • Depending on the input AI can struggle to give positive feedback, which can result in high stress levels for students.
  • Students become too dependent on the system to receive feedback.
  • Important for instructors to create parameters around using these systems.
  • Important for students to have knowledge of the domain in which they are writing about.

Tips on using AI for Feedback

  1. Give the system a prompt so that it can give you the best feedback.
    • Check out our Instructional Guide on Tips & Tricks for Prompt Writing
  2. Never put confidential Information into the system.
  3. Be sure to take feedback given by Generative AI tools and evaluate the content and continue to edit your original work taking the feedback into consideration.
  4. Chunk out the work you're looking to receive feedback on into small pieces to feed into the generative AI tool.
    • This will allow the system to give you feedback on specific pieces of your work, this will also make it easier to prompt the system on what type of feedback you're looking for.

❗❗Only put your own work into an AI system for feedback. If you are putting someone else's work into the system make sure you have their permission and tell them what you will be doing with it. ❗❗
