Biographical Information
Debra A. Noumair is Professor of Psychology and Education and Founder and Faculty Director of the Executive Master's Program in Change Leadership (XMA), Department of Organization and Leadership, Program in Social-Organizational Psychology at Teachers College,Columbia University.
With a career dedicated to bridging the gap between research and practice, ProfessorNoumair is deeply involved in teaching, research, consulting, and coaching. Her innovative leadership development programs are designed to educate scholar-practitioners and advance leadership capabilities. In recognition of her work as primary architect of the ExecutiveMaster’s Program in Change Leadership, Professor Noumair won the first Teachers College, Columbia University Teaching Award in 2020 and was a second-time winner of the award in 2022. Outside of Columbia, Professor Noumair directs executive education programs in global organizations in Asia-Pacific, Europe, and the United States and serves on the faculty of the Change Leadership Master of Science Program (Oxford Said Business School & HEC- Paris), and on the faculty of Leading Women Executives (a CEO-sponsored leadership development program in the US).
The focus of Professor Noumair’s academic work is on applying systems psychodynamics to organization change with individuals, teams, and organizations. She is animated by creating opportunities to develop the capacity to think systemically, to link overt behavior to covert dynamics, and to discuss the un-discussable as she views these competencies as central to surviving and thriving in social systems. As a Fellow of the A. K. Rice Institute for the Study of Social Systems, the educational institution for Group Relations in the US, her work is informed by systems and psychodynamic theories and experiential learning. Through her research, Professor Noumair developed X-Ray Vision, a tool which provides a framework for linking overt behavior and covert dynamics to develop a comprehensive understanding of group and organizational life and advance organization change.
Professor Noumair partners with organizations in the private, public, and not-for-profit sectors to advance under-represented groups through examining systemic barriers, teaching group dynamics, and conducting assessment-anchored executive coaching with senior leaders. As an expert on the Hogan Assessments, she coaches leaders and leadership teams to increase their individual and collective emotional intelligence to achieve strategic goals.
Professor Noumair is co-author of Organization Development: A Process of Learning & Changing, 3rd Edition, co-editor of the annual book series, Research in Organization Change and Development, and coeditor of Group Dynamics, Organizational Irrationality, and Social Complexity: Group Relations Reader 3. She serves on the Editorial Board of The Journal of Applied Behavioral Science.
Professor Noumair received her bachelor’s degree from Boston University and her master’s and doctoral degrees from Teachers College, Columbia University.
