Master of Science
Both the Ed.M. and M.S. programs require 60 credits and involve extensive preparation in mathematics education. For the M.S. degree there is greater emphasis on preparation in mathematics content. In the Ed.M. degree there is greater emphasis on preparation in professional education.

Mathematics education students seeking Master of Arts, Master of Science, and Master of Education degrees are expected to have completed at least 24 credits of undergraduate mathematics.

Master of Science
Normally the program of studies for the Master of Science (M.S.) degree should include 42 points of courses in mathematics and mathematics education within the minimum requirement of 60 points.
Preparation in mathematics content should be of sufficient depth in two or three areas to communicate content effectively at the freshman and sophomore college levels. Algebra, geometry, analysis, and discrete mathematics are recommended as areas of concentration. Content courses can be selected from courses offered by theDepartment or from courses offered by the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences of Columbia University.
Preparation in statistics is also recommended.
